How to reset SLM Data and recreate LDDA Products in SLM.

Warning this will remove ALL SLM data so be sure to have a Database backup prior to running through the steps below. Use only if you want to reset data.

Occasionally the need to reset SLM data and recreate LDDA products occurs. This usually occurs when you upgrade from a much older version of LDMS to a current version (I.E 9.0 >9.6). One of the most common times is duplicate SLM licenses, though other calculation errors can happen when the database is in this state. To reset your data in SLM you can do the following:

(Note: if you have a lot of time invested in SLM customization you may want to find another solution as this will reset all SLM/DA data back to factory defaults.)

  1. Close the console.
  2. Stop the Inventory Service.
  3. Run this Statement against the DB

     (the following is for SQL)

delete from SLM_LicenseGroupingREF

delete from SLM_ProductGroupingREF

delete from SLM_LicenseProductREF

delete from SLM_ProductUsageFile

delete from SLM_SoftwareLicense

delete from SLM_SoftwareLicense

delete from ProductFile

delete from ProductComputer

delete from ProductHash

delete from ProductRules

delete from product

delete from DA_ProductLookup

*If running LDDA 9.51 or older the last line changes from delete from  DA_ProductLookup to delete from MP_ProductLookup.

  1. Relaunch the console.
  2. In DTS, go to license software, right click on licensed software and select add license software to SLM
  3. When that completes, got to Software License Import, right click on that and select Import software license lookup Information.
    1. Browse to the Management Suite/mp.xml directory and select the productlookup.xml
  4. After that runs, open the SLM Console, go to administration->Calculations and recalculate.
  5. Then go into the monitored list and verify all the duplicates are gone. (should see ~1000ish items(depending on LDDA version))
  6. Restart the Inventory service
  7. Give it a day for all the background processes to run an update as needed.
  8. Then run a full sync scan on all devices to populate all the additional data needed.
  9. Reimport any licenses needed.

Using a WMI Tester Utility to see of SQL Server information can be retrieved for Discovery Services

$
0
0

Description: This article is a method of testing Windows Management Interface (WMI) classes to see if they are working properly. Data Analytics uses WMI calls remotely with Discovery Services in order to gather detailed information on SQL Server for Software License Monitoring. The following document references the procedure in Discovery Services. Sometimes the WMI information on a machine may become corrupted and as a result will not return information correctly. Instead an error is returned in the Discovery log located in the C:\Program Files\LANDesk\ManagementSuite\MP_Log folder. See below

Microsoft SQL Server Licenses (Discovery Services article)

Error:

ERROR 9/16/2015 7:37:46 AM: Thread WMI0:WMIDiscover.DoWork, 10.14.107.6: Error processing rule Computer.Device ID Object reference not set to an instance of an object.    at ManagedPlanet.DiscoveryServices.WmiRegistry.RegistryConnection.GetRegistryProperties(String machineName, ConnectionOptions options, RegistryObject propertiesHolder)

   at ManagedPlanet.DiscoveryServices.WmiRegistry.RegistryRemote.GetRegistryProperties()

at ManagedPlanet.DiscoveryServices.WmiRegistry.RegistryRemote..ctor(String userName, String password, String domain, String machineName)

at ManagedPlanet.DiscoveryServices.WMIDiscoverThread.GetRegistryData(WMIRule rule, WindowsLoginSetting login, String sAddress)

   at ManagedPlanet.DiscoveryServices.WMIDiscoverThread.DoWork()

Test for WMI:

1- Find what classes are listed.

2- Download a test utility. Example used in this document: Paessler

3- Configure and run the test utility. See below:

The following screen shot shows the configuration options for the Paessler utility.

SQLWMITest2.png

The following screen shot shows additional configuration options as well as the results of the test query. You can see various information about SQL Server displayed in the window. If this information isn't present then the call failed to work and WMI will need to be repaired. Repairing WMI is part of the operating system and outside the scope of support. Microsoft or other utilities on the web may be able to help.

SQLWMITest1.png

Additional Notes:

If an error is displayed then the class may need to be changed: (Example: root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ComputerManagement12 to root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ComputerManagement11

SQLWMITest3.png

If nothing is returned like below...then that is usually the cause of the error above regarding "object reference not set to an instance of an object".

We are running LDMS 9.6 SP2. Did Dell break the DTS web import rule for Dell Warranties? Since Monday I have been receiving the following error when running the rule manually or automatically during a scan. I redacted the service tag as XXXXXX. Thank you.

LDMS 9.6 Rollup with DA

Is anyone using a LDMS 9.6 SP2 rollup core with DA 9.6? If so, I would be interested to know if they have been successful with replication or any issues they may have had.

We are currently running LDMS 9.6 SP2 with DA 9.6 SP2 on our rollup core and trying to replicate 4 other child cores ranging from 9.5 SP2 to 9.6 SP2, all with DA 9.6 SP2

We have been working with support for over a month trying to get things to work properly or even finish a complete replication.

Any feedback from a successful setup would be great.

Thanks

Reports Do Not Save Error: "Could Not Save The Report"

Symptom

When you attempt to save a report after it has run, you get the error "Could Not Save Report. Error: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized..Check rights for the remote/report/files directory. Also, you may need to run SCHEDREP.EXE /I to rewrite login information."

The problem stems from the user rights of the authenticated user in SCHEDREP configuration.

Resolution

1. Run the SchedRep.exe utility with the "/I" switch from an administrator elevated command line:

2. The Enter Login Information window will open. Change the user to a Domain Admin account. (If the account used does not have full administrative rights the reports will not save properly)

*Note* The login window does not check or warn you if you enter incorrect information. You will want to make sure that the account you are entering there has the correct password and all the information is correct.

3. Once that information is updated, select OK and run an IIS Reset (How do I run an IIS reset?) from the command line.

4. Rerun the reports causing the problems with the 401 error and try to save them.

Microsoft SQL Server Licensing

Microsoft SQL Server Licensing

One challenging product to license has been Microsoft SQL Server. When it installs, regardless of the edition, it leaves behind the same Programs entries, the same registry values.  Regardless of whether you install Enterprise, Standard, Developer or Express, the same executable(s) are run.  This makes querying off the inventory difficult if not impossible to determine what edition of SQL you need to purchase.

There is one place in the registry where the current edition of SQL Server is stored, and that is in the instance description.  The problem is that the registry key to search for is tied to the instance name, so there really is no way to predict what the exact key will be ahead of time, so you cannot configure the inventory scanner to gather it.

To alleviate this problem, Discovery Services has the ability to gather this information.

If you configure a Discovery Services configuration to gather this information, the Data Translation Services Licensed Software rules will be able to correctly assign the edition of SQL Server that is being used.

To configure SQL Discovery

The first step is configuring an address object that will only run a discovery on devices running SQL Server.

        1. In Discover Services Right click on Addresses – All Addresses and select Add Address.

Capture1.PNG

          2. Give it a name.

          3. Then select Management Suite Query as the type of address and select All SQL Server Machines from the drop down list.

(This is a prebuilt query that installs with Discovery Services.)

Capture2.PNG

Second Step

1.

        1.  Right click on Logins and select Add Windows Login.

Capture3.PNG

Capture4a.PNG

Note : This is the Windows Login that will be connecting to the SQL Servers via WMI to read the registry.  This user must have admin access to these devices.  You may create as many login objects as needed.

Third Step:

          1. Right click on Configuration and select Add Config.

          Capture4.PNG

3.              2. Give the config a name, select WMI and click next.

                    Capture5.PNG

4.                3. Click Next

5.      The next dialog is the Addresses for this config.

4 .Select the address created in the first step of this document and click next.

              Capture6.PNG

6.                5. Next select the logins created in step two and click Next.

                Capture7.PNG

7.              6.  On the WMI groups dialog, delete Full Scan from the list and Add in the SQL Server Instances group.  This will only gather the SQL Server instance information, not all the information a full scan would.

  Capture8.PNG

Capture9.PNG

8.      7. Click Next and Finish the config.

Then run this configuration.

9.      1.Right Click Run now

It will scan all devices in the query and if it can connect, pull back the instance information.  This information will be stored under the Computer.Managed Planet.SQL Instances class in inventory.

In 9.6 SP2 it is listed in Software > Additional Detection > SQL Instances

The Licensed Software rules will then use the Edition attribute to determine what kind of SQL installation this is.  These rules are run nightly by the Software Manager Service.

It is suggested this configuration is scheduled to run periodically to keep the data current.

Additional Info

The SQL Server Instances group looks through the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Names\ and finds the list of instance names on the sql server. From there it will search for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\<Instance Name>\Setup. In that location it will find the version and the edition of each SQL Instance on the device and send it along to inventory.

Archive to Asset Control

Want to automate the process of WMI scanned devices to be archived to the asset control DB.

What is the process behind this archive. Can we make a task of it where I can put a query to scan type = WMI to schedule this task ?

Auto Populate from Email.

Hi Guys,

I'm creating Web forms for our company to work, They send an email to a mailbox when the form is completed. We currently have a mailbox set up that automatically logs a new ticket in landesk with the information in the email.

I am wondering if the information from the body of the email can auto populate a form within Landesk to start a new Request ticket.

Discovery Services: SQL Discovery Returns Object Reference Error

$

We've seen this error occur in multiple environments. Here's a workaround to address this problem. Attached is a powershell script that will itterate through all of the SQL registry tree's on a sql server and send the data back via the custom miniscan flag. Now with the inclusion of miniscan this script requires an agent to be installed on the device. Essentially, all you should have to do is run this script on a device and it will return the same results you'd get from the SQL Discovery Rule to inventory for your device.

To take this a step further, you can deploy this script in a distribution package and send it to your devices you need to get this information from for your reports.

Note: This script has been tested and works on 9.5, 9.6 or greater agents.

Temporary Internet Files Growing Very Large On Core

$

Problem:

Temporary internet files are filling up the system drive on the core usually in this path:

C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\IE

Cause:

By default, Web Rules are ran by a "local system account". This is determined by the settings on the Managed Planet Core Scan Service properties. If you are running Web Rules in Data Analytics that are set to active, you will fill up the IE Cache very quickly with temporary files.

Resolution:

LANDESK recommends that when you install LANDESK Data Analytics that you configure your Managed Planet Core Scan Processor service be configured with a domain administrator account. Generally customers will create a "Service Account" that has domain admin access but is strictly for use with LANDESK services installed on the core. As long as you have configured your services to use this "Service Account" you can use the following resolution to attempt to limit the amount of temporary internet files that you see on the core. **Note: this solution won't cause all of the temporary internet files to instantly go away, but it should limit the amount that get created and stick around.

In addition, it is also recommended that Web Rules in Data Analytics set to be scheduled instead of running them as an Active Rule. Active Rules are ran as inventory is received and can generate a lot of unnecessary web traffic, which as a result causes and files in that folder to get created and steadily increase in numbers. You may keep the Web Rules set to active if you prefer, however please keep this in mind when you configure these kinds of rules. **Note: The term Web Rules includes (but not limited to) rules such as CDW, Microsoft, Adobe B2B connectors, etc.

This article will go over how to change the settings in the service and in Internet Explorer to prevent those unnecessary files from filing up the hard drive.

1. Navigate to the previously mentioned INetCache folder and delete the files in that folder.

2. From the Core, open the list of Services,

log on as.png

3. Log onto the Core as that Domain Administrator, open Internet Explorer and click Tools (gear icon)

internet options.png

In Internet Options click the Advanced tab, and scroll down the settings. In the Security category check the box for Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed

advanced.png

Click Apply, and close the Internet Options window

Note: The Temporary Internet files may take time to be removed. We are relying on the Internet Explorer settings to remove the files; LANDESK is not directly deleting these files. If the files are not removed, it may require other means to clear this directory of files such as using a scheduled script that clears files. This functionality is not directly managed via the LDMS Core.

Disappearing Data

I've got a case of Disappearing Data.  We're running LDMS 9.6 SP2 and Data Analytics 9.62.0670.  New PCs arrive and are entered using the standard Enter New Device web form, creating a Stub record.  I then enter Asset Tag and Purchase Order information using DA web forms.  The Asset Tag and PO info remains with the record until partway through the Imaging process when the PC gets a new device name.  At that point the data seems to be deleted.  I've looked into the Device ID Attributes in the Inventory Services Manage Duplicates section and removed Computer.Device Name as one of the triggering attributes.  (Our Device Names change at least twice during imaging and any time the PC gets deployed to a new location.)  Since our PCs get reimaged fairly regularly, how can I assure that the PO info remains with the record throughout the lifecycle?

Software Store links not working with roaming users between x86 and x64 architecture windows systems

$
0
0

Description

When a user with a roaming profile moves from a x64 to a x86 device, (or vice-versa), the shortcuts from the Software Store still link to the program folder of the other architecture.

Cause

Software Store links only get updated by a call of ssclient.exe.

Solution

For roaming users it is necessary to call ssclient.exe every time they log-on to a system to ensure the links meet the local architecture.

This can be done via a GPO that places a shortcut to ssclient.exe in the start-up folder of the start menu for these roaming users. That way ssclient.exe gets started every time the user logs in and all shortcuts are adjusted to the local architecture.

Installation problems with XML import error message "Error configuring software store client. Could not add DeliveryMethod" or 'MP_Addon_Groups' does not exist.

$

Under DataAnalytics 9.5 the error message changes to lots of errors when trying to import various xml files that the object 'MP_Addon_Groups' does not exist. The cause and the solution however are the same as with Managed Planet 9.05 and greater.

Description

During the Database config step of the Data Analytics installation an error messages may pop up indicating that an XML file cannot be imported. The screenshot looks like this:

Installation_failure.png

Cause

Due to some interactions with Management Suite during the install, the O/S must be switched to US English during the install process for the core only.  When the install is complete, it can be switched back.

See this link for description: http://www.managedplanet.com/news/2012/4/29/landesk-analytics-formerly-known-as-managed-planet-extension.html

Solution

To get Data Analytics installed please try the following steps;

1) Set the localization of your core to American English

    1. To change the settings on Windows Server 2008, go into Region and Language settings.  On the Formats tab change the format to English (United States) and on the Administrative tab click the Change System Locale.  Then set the Current System Locale to English (United States)

2) Search for a xml called enutranslations.xml in "C:\Program Files (x86)\LANDesk\ManagementSuite"

3) Copy enutranslations.xml and rename the copy into engtranslations.xml. Make sure both files are in the directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\LANDesk\ManagementSuite"

4) Re-install Data Analytics

Active Directory information is not pulled into Management Suite when running Data Analytics DTS > LDAP

$

Symptom(s):

When running LDAP Import rules, active directory information does not get pulled into the database.  When a rule is run manually, the following error is displayed:

No LDAP objects match search criteria.

Cause:

The container to search was set to something other than the root of Active Directory tree, so the object could not be found.

Resolution:

Edit the LDAP Import rule and leave the LDAP Container field blank.  This will cause the entire tree to be searched, if the object is anywhere in the tree, it should be found.

.MP files are collecting in the LDSCAN folder / lots of .mp files in LDSCAN folder

Issue / Symptom(s):

  • When I check the \Program Files\LANDESK\ManagementSuite\LDSCAN folder, there are lots and lots of files collecting there.  They all have a .MP extension.

If Inventory Scans stopped running after upgrading to 9.5: http://community.landesk.com/support/docs/DOC-27516

Cause:

  • The number of threads for the Managed Planet Core Scan Processor service may be set too low.
    • There are a number of processes that Managed Planet software performs (such as DTS gathering warranty information or ISM performing its checks) that can take a comparatively long time to perform.  To prevent this from becoming a bottleneck, the MPCore service by default should have 10 threads running simultaneously to execute these tasks.  Since they are not normally CPU intensive, this does not impact the CPU on the core server.

Resolution:

  • Verify that the number of threads is set to sufficiently high number (typically 10).  This is set in the
    • ThreadCount  registry value of the  HKLM\Sofware\ManagedPlanet\Core  registry key.
  • Restart the Managed Planet Core Scan Processor service after changing this value.
  • Verify that the Managed Planet Core Scan Processor service is set to use a local administrator account.

NOTE: If DTS is being used and web rules are enabled, the Local System account frequently is unable to access the web, causing the process to hang for 30 seconds until it times out.
